CHAPTER 18: manifesto

Brenner ran as fast as he could, twisting and turning through the hallways he’d memorized during his purification. The alarm wailed on as he spun through the immaculate maze. Footsteps followed behind, but he was faster, pushing on with renewed purpose.

A series of bullets riddled the wall beside him as he turned the next corner. Five sheep fired upon him as he dove to the ground. Before he could see their white unthinking eyes it took just one thought—Die!—and simultaneously they dropped to the floor in convulsing heaps. Brenner could feel his body growing more powerful with each step as he hurried down the next hallway. The encounter with the sheep had allowed the prodigies chasing him to gain some ground. Seconds later he burst through the archway into the Classroom, coming face to face with a large, six-barreled gun. The only thing more shocking than the immensity of the weapon was the person wielding it—Van Buren. The room was littered with dead bodies, some still strapped to their chairs. From behind Van Buren, a familiar voice called out, “Hit the deck, man!” It was Reece.

Brenner spawled to the floor as Van Buren lit up the room behind him. Bullets poured from her weapon, eviscerating the procession behind him. His hair stood on end as she squeezed the trigger until the gun was empty.

“Time to go, Brenner. We gotta go.”

“Shortie? Brent?” The twins helped him up. Vlad and Conner were there too. Brenner was speechless. “How’d you find me?”

Vlad hurried them on. “Not now, Brenner. We’re gonna have to get clear of this place first.”

Van Buren dropped her weapon. The Classroom was a disaster. She’d destroyed every computer screen as well as some thirty prodigies. She looked at him sidelong and then smiled. “I was wrong to have attacked you in the lab.”

“How do you know about that?”

She smiled again. “Reece, Vlad, can you help him?”

“I’m fine. I can walk.”

“Shouldn’t you light them on fire or something?” Conner said. “I mean what if they aren’t dead?”

“Oh they’re dead, believe me,” Van Buren said.

The twins left first followed by Vlad, Reece and Conner, leaving Brenner alone with Van Buren a moment.

“It’s good to have you back,” she said.

“It’s good to be back, believe me.”

“Shall we?”

“Probably a good idea.”

She popped the top of a heavy round object and tossed it into the other hallway. “Come on. We don’t want to be around when that goes off.”

They turned and hurried up the stairs, bursting out into the cold bright starry night through a door near the rear of the building. Van Buren led him into the woods where he could see the others waiting. Once they were all at a safe distance they stopped for breath. Brenner turned and looked at the SS. Clouds of smoke billowed from the lower windows and sprinklers showered the main entrance. Then, with a deep resounding thud, the entire building went dark. The sound of sirens resonated in the distance.

“We need to get to the lab,” Van Buren said.
